Finally—An All-Canadian, Health Literacy Resource

Written by teachers for Canadian students, Healthy Active Living: Keep Fit, Stay Healthy, Have Fun is custom-made for the Grade 9 and Grade 10 PPL courses in Ontario.

Healthy Active Living was developed in association with the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association (Ophea). It meets and exceeds all curriculum expectations for Grades 9 and 10. Healthy Active Living comes with (1) Student Activity Manuals for each grade, (2) a comprehensive teacher’s manual, and (3) a wide range of print and online classroom support materials.

  • Comprehensive Student Health. In addition to material on sexuality, drugs, personal safety and nutrition, Healthy Active Living provides students with interactive material on fitness appraisals, goal setting, strength exercises and safety and injury prevention. A wide range of school sports and activities are presented under the “teaching games for understanding” framework.
  • Think Literacy. The textbook, activity handbooks and teachers manuals are also infused with literacy strategies that comply with the new Ministry “Think Literacy” document released in May 2005.
  • CPR Student Manual. Included in the Healthy Active Living textbook is the full CPR Student Manual (courtesy of the Act Foundation, Ottawa). The Student Activity Book (Grade 9) contains the CPR worksheets associated with the CPR Manual.

Healthy Active Living is really three books in one:

  • Keep Fit — The first third is devoted to fitness appraisals, goal setting, strength exercises and safety and injury prevention -- Units 1, 2 and 3
  • Stay Healthy — The second third focuses on core health (drugs, sexuality, conflict, and nutrition) — Units 4, 5, 6 and 7
  • Have Fun — The final third describes 25 sports and physical activities students will encounter in school (from soccer and ultimate frisbee to yoga and dance) — Unit 8
  • PLUS The Act Foundation's High School CPR Student Manual
